Bobbi Brown Makeover - In Detail and a Mini Giveaway

OK, I wrote a week ago that I had gone for a Bobbi Brown makeover at their store in Pavilion after a not-so-pleasant encounter with one of their rude staff another of their store in Midvalley.

So when I walked into their store, it was all smiles and 'hellos' and 'welcome to Bobbi Brown'. Boy, they surely had quite a lot of staff, I think I counted about 4 or 5 of them. I looked for Rachyl, the makeup artist I was supposed to meet. She presented me with a Bobbi Brown 10-Step Beauty booklet (pic below) which according to her, was used when they are conducting makeup workshops. So they do conduct makeup workshops for small groups of people from time-to-time. As the month of May is my birthday month, I will be organizing a Bobbi Brown makeup workshop as a gift for my readers. As the seats are limited, a contest will be held and 2 lucky readers will be chosen to attend the workshop together with me and some of my friends. Details will be posted once I finalize everything. Check my blog often for updates.

Ok, let's start with my makeover. Actually, it was more like a personalised makeup workshop/consultation, as Rachyl explained to me step-by-step what she did. She referred to the 10-Step Beauty booklet while doing her explanation. Bobbi Brown placed a lot of importance on prepping the face as when the base is right, you will need only minimal makeup. Rachyl started by cleansing my face (known as Pre-Makeup step in the booklet) for the application of the moisturiser and eye cream. She used Vitamin Enriched Face Base (pic below), a moisturiser doubling up as makeup base on my whole face except for the eyes, she used Bobbi Brown's Hydrating Eye Cream. Both products have very light texture and not oily/greasy. I especially like the scent of the Vitamin Enriched Face Base which contains shea butter. The scent was actually a refreshing citrusy one despite nothing in the ingredient list suggesting citrus. I could actually feel the difference the next day from the use of this moisturiser just one time in that my skin not only felt well-moisturised but also very smooth to touch. Of course, that was only 1 time.

I'm fallin' in love with this moisturiser

I'm planning to purchase this moisturiser as they are having a Mother's Day special till 10th May whereby purchase this with any other Bobbi Brown(BB) product, you will get a full-sized lipstick FREE.

Next, Step 1: Putting on concealer. BB advocates putting on concealer first, followed by foundation.

Click the photo to enlarge

I used to do otherwise. Rachyl used beige colour from the concealer kit to cover some spots on my face and undereye dark circles. To cover the redness on both sides of my nose, she used the color corrector in Bisque.

Step 2: Foundation To choose the right foundation shade for me, she tested a few shades on my jawline and chose Beige. She applied the foundation with a brush and used her fingers to blend it for better coverage, as the warmth and oil from our fingertips will help spread to foundation better.

Step 3: Powder To set the concealer and foundation for a crease-free and long wear makeup, she applied Face Powder in Pale Yellow. Until this step, I noticed that BB uses very simple straight-forward names for their colours and shades. You just need to read the label and you can have an idea how the colour might look like.

After Step 3, my face was fully prepped with a moisturised and smooth skin. The next steps would involve putting on colours on my face! Yay! My most-awaited part in any makeover session;)

In what order would you normally put on your colour cosmetics? Answer this question by leaving a comment below and you'll stand a chance to win 2 Bobbi Brown skincare samples.

I would do from top-to-bottom, that is eyeshadows 1st, blusher and finished off with my lips. Sometimes, I do the lips then finishing off with blusher. No matter what, eyeshadows always come first for me as I simply love to play with the multi-array of colours!

However BB advocates putting a blush first before anything else. And why?

Step 4: Blush Rachyl picked out 3 pink blushes in shades varying from light pink to a bright fuchsia pink which complemented my skin tone and told me to choose. I chose Shimmer Blush in Pink Sugar which a light pink. I like pink (for a sweet casual look) to coral (more natural, a bit on the serious side) as my blush and colours for my eyes! She used the blush brush to apply the blush in an outward motion towards my hairline and then, downwards to tone it down and for an even application. She used the lower 3 colours on the Platinum Pink Shimmer Brick to hightlight my cheeks.

The new Limited Edition Platinum Pink Shimmer Brick

And why Blush takes precedence over the eyes and/or lips? Because according to BB, the Blush will set a platform to decide on the colours of the eyes and lips as not to have too bright eye colours or lip colours. Basically, the eyes and lips are to complement the cheeks. I will do more research on this later and write a dedicated post answering this question.

Step 5 and 6: Lipstick/Gloss and Lip Liner In my case, I chose a sweet bright pink lipstick, Creamy Lip Color in Retro Pink (one of their new shades), applied with a lip brush to define the lip contour. No lip liner was used.

Step 7: Brows According to the booklet, use a dark-colored eyeshadow for the brows and I chose Slate, a medium brown colour.

Step 8: Eye Shadow My favourite part! I had chosen a Long-Wear Cream Shadow in Malted as an eye base to Rachyl's surprise. According to her, not many knew that a cream eyeshadow can be used as a base. She applied Malted on my entire lids with a finger. She had proposed for me to try some natural shades but I was in the mood for some colours on my eyes. I wanted to be bold and chose Shimmer Wash Eye Shadow in Eggplant, a deep purple, which was applied on my lids. I told Rachyl to use the Platinum Pink Shimmer Brick to highlight my eyes - the top 2 shades: soft pink and platinum.

Step 9: Eye Liner I had wanted to try their long-wear gel eyeliner after having tried Stila's smudge pots which were awesome. BB gel eyeliners come in 14 different shades.
I chose a dark blue colour to complement the dark purple shadow I had chosen.

Step 10: Mascara No Smudge Mascara in Black on the upper and lower lashes to finish off my makeover.

And here is me after the makeover..............

I would call this 'minimalist' makeup,
very little colours but accentuating my features
(My nose was never this sharp. Haha!)

Face of the Day/ Eye of the Day

Huh! That looked pretty much to achieve a 'minimalist' look, wasn't it?

4. Eye shadow

mine is really minimalist. only what is necessary. don't have that many products at the moment anyway

Comments:

yeah...it's interesting to know how what's the sequence of making up.

In my opinion, there is no "fix" way of which comes first, but it depends on what kind of look you wana create. To me, make-up is pretty much like doing sth fun and creative. So to me, it doesn't matter that much, coz i'm not the kind of professional person anyhow.

I'd start with my face (base, concealor, foundation), then eyes (because it's the best part of my face, so i would enhance it), thn blush n highlight. Lastly, lip colour.

Comments:
